Ice avalanches on Saturn moon offer clues to extreme slippage elsewhere in solar system

Saturn’s ice moon Iapetus has more giant landslides than any solar system body other than Mars. Measurements of the avalanches suggest that some mechanism lowered their coefficients of friction so that they flowed rather than tumbled, traveling extraordinary distances before coming to rest. WUSTL scientists suggest an experimental test that might provide some answers.

$4.7 million study looks at why diabetes makes heart disease worse

Researchers, led by Jean E. Schaffer, MD, at the School of Medicine have received a $4.7 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to investigate heart disease in patients with diabetes.

Master of Public Health Program receives national accreditation

The Brown School’s Master of Public Health program recently was accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. This national recognition will provide students and alumni expanded job opportunities, fellowships and doctoral admissions, says Edward F. Lawlor, PhD, dean of the Brown School and the William E. Gordon Distinguished Professor.

Grants to spur robust startup culture in St. Louis

Jonathan T.Z. Chen, a 2008 Olin Business School graduate and co-founder and chief operating officer of MedPreps LLC, gives a thumbs-up after his company won a $50,000 Arch Grant. Chen is among 11 Washington University-affiliated entrepreneurs to win one of the inaugural grants designed to boost startups.

Gabby Reuveni, undergraduate, 20

Gabby Reuveni, a rising junior, died Saturday, July 14, 2012, after being struck by a pickup truck while running in Palmyra Township, Pa. Reuveni, a member of the WUSTL women’s cross country and track & field teams, was 20.

Wight nominated for 2012 AFCA Good Works Team

Junior Seth Wight has been selected as a nominee for the 2012 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. Wight is one of 117 student-athletes from all levels of college football up for one of the 22 final spots on the team, which will be unveiled in September.
